If you find yourself bored frequently throughout the week between classes or in the afternoons when you get off work then you’re probably using your free time to do nothing but surf Facebook and waste time scrolling through Instagram. If you’re really bored then maybe you’re just aimlessly watching people’s stories on Snap Chat. These bits of free time are begging to be used productively.

Below are handfuls of resources that you can use to gain new skills and conquer boredom. They will teach you practically anything, from making hummus to building apps in node.js, most of them for free. There is absolutely no excuse for you not to master a new skill, expand your knowledge, and make you a more balanced professional. A wise man once said, “Formal education will make you a living, but self education will make you a fortune” and he couldn’t have been more right.

Using the resources below you can control what you want to learn and at what pace you want to learn it. You can develop skills you actually care about instead of having to learn meaningless content by force. Honestly… what are you waiting for?

TED-Ed — Find carefully curated educational videos.

Guides.co — Search the largest collection of online guides.

Squareknot — Another site to browse informative, step-by-step guides.

Learnist — Learn from expertly curated web, print and video content.

Curious— Grow your skills with online video lessons.

 

Learn new languages

Duolingo — Learn a language for free. Very similar to Rosetta Stone style of learning but instead of paying hundreds of dollars… it’s FREE! (Also an app)

Lingvist — This website claims it can teach you a language if you dedicate 200 hours to it. I guess there’s only one way to find out right?

Memrise — Use flashcards to learn vocabulary.

 

Take an online course

edX — Take online courses from the world’s best universities. Most are free!

Coursera — Very similar to edX but offers even more courses! ALSO FREE!

Coursmos — Take a micro-course anytime you want, even on your phone. Great for those little bit of free time between classes!

Highbrow — Get bite-sized daily courses to your inbox to help you feel productive when you’re just going through your daily emails.

Skillshare —  Online classes and projects that unlock your creativity. Free trial is available but usually members pay a yearly subscription fee.

Lynda — Learn development, design, photography, business, education, animation, video and audio lessons. How can 1 of those possibly not interest you?
